NYCC '06: Ultimate Spider-Man
February 26, 2006 - During Sunday's Ultimate Marvel panel, Brian Bendis and Mark Bagley discussed the future of Spider-Man.
Upcoming, Spidey will meet with Ultimate Deadpool. Bendis asks that readers "open [their] mind for a re-interpretation of the character." This is a departure from the Deadpool you know and love. Let's hope he still has that non-stop mouth.
After the Deadpool arc, readers get a taste of Ultimate Morbius. The vampire story also features the debut of Ultimate Blade.
Once the Morbius story ends, thing kick into high gear on the road to two milestones -- issue #100 and #104. It's issue #104 that makes Bendis and Bagley the longest continuous comics duo, topping Stan Lee and Jack Kirby run on Amazing Spider-Man.
"Issue #97 starts the Clone Saga," Bendis said. The story concludes with issue #104. Things look to get hectic. During the Saga, expect "a lot of Kitty/MJ stuff" and appearances by Scorpion, Tarantula and Spider-Woman. The Fantastic Four is very involved in the Clone Saga, so expect Reed Richards' brain to be on display (though not literally).
A couple of other interesting conversations evolved as Bagley and Bendis discussed past USM stories. Bendis acknowledged several times that he understood why fans were upset by the death of Gwen Stacy. The fan-fave writer said the death was "always planned" and that it was designed to "represent how close the horror comes to [Peter's] family." He added that readers would never have seen Kitty Pryde and Peter Parker hook up were it not for the death of Gwen Stacy.
Bagley, who pencils 18 USM issues a year, asserted that he was "not that fast." He assigned his ability to turn around work quickly to a strong work ethic and a style that lacks excessive detail. Commenting on artists who spend months getting the perfect image with infinite levels of detail, Bagley said, "Storytelling in not about the minutiae."
The most popular Spidey villain also came up in the conversation. Bagley revealed that Venom actually had the symbol on his chest and that Marvel "took it out" of the interior art.
"We will do Venom again," Bendis promised before stating that they needed to "let the [recent Spider-Man] videogame have its breathing room."
